Relational issues are not specific to couples or parent-child relationships. We are all relational beings and therefore every relationship we have is important. Individuals often seek help for relationships happening outside of the therapy room.

Common reasons people seek help for relational issues include

  • Unclear boundaries or troubles with setting/maintaining boundaries

  • Insecure attachment/ attachment related triggers

  • Uneven power distribution in relationships

  • Conflicted loyalties (often between parents and partner or parents and self)

  • Breaking intergenerational patterns

  • Violations of trust  (not limited to infidelity)

  • Codependency

  • Communication issues

  • Premarital counseling

  • Unbalance in life (work/school/family/life in general)

  • Divorce

  • Family of origin challenges

  • Difficulties with intimacy or safety in relationships

    • It should be noted that it is unethical in the state of California to provide psychotherapy to couples where active intimate partner violence (IPV) is present. If you are seeking couples counseling due to IPV please specify this in your initial contact to discuss appropriate next steps. This can consist of separate sessions until there is no more safety concern, or a refusal of services and referrals to safe alternatives.
